GEO_SN1986 indicates the region of Senegal where the respondent was interviewed. DHS regions in the 1986 Senegal survey are equivalent to groups of regions.

Comparability

GEO_SN1986 is harmonized into four broad regions. Note that these regions are different from the GEO_SN2005_2019 regions. Other geography variables for Senegal include GEO_SN1986_2017.

Based on the 14 administrative regions in 2017, GEO_SN1986_2017 combines regions into:

• West (Dakar, Thiès)
• Center (Diourbel, Fatick, Kaolack, Louga, Kaffrine)
• North east (Saint-Louis, Tambacounda, Matam, Kedougou)
• South (Kolda, Ziguinchor, Sedhiou)

Based on the 14 administrative regions in 2017, GEO_SN2005_2019, combine regions into:

• West (Dakar, Thiès)
• Center (Diourbel, Fatick, Kaolack, Kaffrine)
• North (Saint-Louis, Louga, Matam)
