Description
GEO_SN1986_2021 indicates the region of Senegal where the respondent was interviewed. The variable is integrated to yield units with consistent boundaries across samples.
Labels identify the modern geographic units (regions) contained in each integrated region. Each sample also has its own non-integrated geography variable. The 2005-2021 Senegal samples have greater geographic detail available in their sample-specific variables.

Comparability
GEO_SN1986_2021 is harmonized into four broad regions. Note that these regions are different from GEO_SN2005_2021. Other geography variables for Senegal include GEO_SN2012_2014 and GEO_SN2015_2016. NOTE: The 2012-2014 and 2015-2016 surveys of Senegal must be combined when using GEO_SN2012_2014 or GEO_SN2015_2016.
Based on the 14 administrative regions in 2017, GEO_SN1986_2021 combines regions into:
- West (Dakar, Thiès)
- Center (Diourbel, Fatick, Kaolack, Louga, Kaffrine)
- North east (Saint-Louis, Tambacounda, Matam, Kedougou)
- South (Kolda, Ziguinchor, Sedhiou)
Based on the 14 administrative regions in 2017, GEO_SN2005_2021, combine regions into:
- West (Dakar, Thiès)
- Center (Diourbel, Fatick, Kaolack, Kaffrine)
- North (Saint-Louis, Louga, Matam)
- South (Kolda, Ziguinchor, Sedhiou, Tambacounda, Kedougou)
Each sample is representative at different levels of geography. Please refer to the list below for details:
- 1986, 1992, 1997: 4 levels of geography (West, Center, South and North East)
- 2005, 2006, 2008: 11 regions
- 2010, 2017, 2021: 14 regions
- 2012, 2014, 2015, and 2016: 4 levels of geography (West, Center, North, South)
- 2012 and 2014 combined together: 14 regions
- 2014 and 2015 combined together: 14 regions
- 2018, 2019, 2021: 4 levels of geography (West, Center, North, South)
- 2021 (MIS): 14 regions
Use the 14 regions from GEO_SN2015_2016 or GEO_SN2012_2014 if you are combining 2012-2014 and 2015-2016 surveys.
The 2006, 2008, and 2021 samples correspond to Malaria Indicators Surveys (MIS).
