GEOLEV2 is a 9-digit numeric variable representing second-level administrative geographic areas.

Description

GEOLEV2 is a geographic crosswalk variable that enables users to link DHS sample clusters to low-level census geography in the IPUMS International database. GEOLEV2PROB is a complimentary variable that reports the probability that a DHS sample cluster was placed in the correct second-level administrative area. GEOLEV2 provides consistent second-level administrative units for each country included across sample years to facilitate comparisons over time.

Users can summarize high-density census data from IPUMS International to the units in GEOLEV2 and attach those measures to IPUMS DHS as contextual information. For example, users might summarize educational attainment in each second-level geographic area using IPUMS International, merge that result onto their IPUMS DHS extract using GEOLEV2 as the linking key, and assess the effect of local educational attainment net of the respondent's own characteristics.

Data from IPUMS International includes many cases, for robust estimates, and these data sometimes cover topics outside the subject matter covered by the Demographic and Health Surveys.

Comparability

A GEOLEV2 code of 999 means that the respective DHS cluster does not have associated location information. Corresponding GEOLEV2PROB codes will be coded as 0.
