GPSLAT and GPSLONG are 10-digit numeric variables with up to 6 decimal places. If the value of GPSLAT or GPSLONG is zero, this represents missing data.

Description

GPSLATLONG represents the latitude and longitude coordinates for the displaced geographic center of the primary sampling unit (IDHSPSU), as provided by the DHS Program. The coordinates (usually referred to as GPS clusters) are provided by the DHS program and are randomly displaced from their true locations. Displacement characters include:

urban clusters are displaced anywhere from 0 to 2 kilometers in any direction.
99% of rural clusters are displaced anywhere from 0 to 5 kilometers in any direction.
1% of rural clusters are displaced up to 10 kilometers in any direction.
Clusters are not displaced across survey regions or national boundaries.

Downloading this variable requires that you have received additional authorization from the DHS Program to access the GPS data associated with specific DHS samples. You will not be able to download an extract with the GPS variables if you have included a sample for which you do not have permission specifically for GPS data. When selecting this variable in your data cart, you will find the variables GPSLAT (latitude) and GPSLONG (longitude) in your data file. You must use both variables to identify the correct location of the displaced geographic center of a primary sampling unit.

GPSLAT and GPSLONG are merged to the data using the variable DHSID.
