YRSCHLTZ reports the number of years of education the respondent completed at the highest level of schooling achieved, in the Tanzanian educational system and as reported in EDUCLVLTZ. This variable is country-specific to Tanzania.

Comparability

In addition to and slight differences in question wording, YRSCHLTZ differs across samples in the available education level categories (found in EDUCLVLTZ. These differences are largely due to changes in the Tanzanian educational system.

Because YRSCHLTZ reports the number of years of schooling at the level achieved, "4 years" does not mean 4 years total, but 4 years at whichever level of education the respondent achieved. Thus, a code of 4 could indicate 4 years of primary school, post-primary training, secondary school, or post-secondary "O" level training, for example.
