Description
HCMCG4 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, the female respondent reported some other traditional therapeutic source as a source for male condoms. The meaning of "other" must be interpreted relative to the specific categories included in a particular sample.
This response category is country-specific to Republic of the Congo - Brazzaville.
Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
HCMCG4 (other traditional therapeutic sources) is combined with HCMCG3 (traditional healer/therapist) in HCMPRIVHL (all traditional healers and herbalists) for the 2005 Republic of the Congo - Brazzaville sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMCG4 are encouraged to review HCMPRIVHL for a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability
HCMCG4 has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phase III forward.
Although HCMCG4 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMPRIVHL, a variable that encompasses all traditional healers and herbalists as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMCG4 or the Comparability tab of HCMPRIVHL for more information on the specific categories combined for the Republic of the Congo - Brazzaville 2005 sample.
