Description

For women who had symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection in the past 12 months, STIADGA1 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported seeking advice or treatment from a private hospital or clinic for this problem. This response category is country-specific to Gabon.

Some samples in the "STIAD" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

STIADGA1 is combined with STIADGA2 (private doctor) in STIADPRIVHOS (private hospital, clinic, or doctor) for the 2012 Gabon sample. IPUMS DHS users interested in using STIADGA1 are encouraged to review STIADPRIVHOS for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

STIADGA1 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question about where the woman received advice/treatment for an STI is included in Phases III, V, and VI forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Although STIADGA1 is a country-specific response not included in the standard DHS modules, it is combined with other responses in STIADPRIVHOS, a standard variable that encompasses private hospitals, clinics, and doctors as sources for STI advice/treatment. IPUMS DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of STIADGA1 or the Comparability tab of STIADPRIVHOS for more information on the specific categories combined for the 2012 Gabon sample.
