SALTEST2 reports the iodine level in the household's cooking salt, using a second grouping for the values. The levels are grouped based on PPM (parts per million).
The information in SALTEST2 is taken from the household record and applies to regular household residents, not temporary visitors. Researchers may wish to exclude visitors using the RESIDENT variable when women, children, or births are the unit of analysis, and using the HHRESIDENT variable when household members are the unit of analysis.
The related variables SALTEST1 (HV234) and SALTEST3 (HV234A) also report iodine levels in cooking salt, but with different groupings. For discussion of the rationale for collecting such information, see SALTEST1.

SALTEST2 has slight differences in the question response categories.
Comparability - Standard DHS
Beginning with Phase 4, the standard DHS questionnaire has included a question about the iodine level in the household's cooking salt. SALTEST2 is a country-specific grouping of iodine levels.
The 2001 Mali survey also includes a test for iodide and alkaline. Responses are coded "0" only if there was no iodine, iodide, or alkaline in the salt. If the salt tested positive for iodide or alkaline, the responses are coded 993. If the salted tested positive for iodine only, the responses are coded 15-90 in IPUMS DHS.
