Comparability
In addition to universe differences, AIDSINFOFRND (V752I) varies across samples in question wording. Most commonly, this question is worded as "From which sources have you learned the most about AIDS? Any other sources?" or some slight variation [emphasis added]. A number of surveys simply ask "From which sources have you learned about AIDS? Any other sources?" or some slight variation.
While most surveys implicitly ask whether the woman has ever heard information about HIV/AIDS from a given source, a few samples specify a time frame. For example, a given sample might ask whether the woman has heard about HIV/AIDS in the last month.
IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Survey Text tab for samples of interest.
Comparability - Standard DHS
AIDSINFOFRND (V752I) is included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phase III.
Comparability — Congo Brazzaville [top]
The 2011 Republic of the Congo - Brazzaville survey includes separate response categories for "father," "mother," "brother/sister," "friend," and "other relative." Because AIDSINFOFRNDMN focuses on all friends/relatives, these responses are consolidated in AIDSINFOFRNDMN to create a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability — Jordan [top]
The 2007 and 2012 Jordan surveys ask whether the respondent has received any information about HIV/AIDS in the last 6 months.
Comparability — Senegal [top]
The 1992 Senegal survey includes separate response categories for "friends" and "parent/family." IPUMS-DHS consolidates these two response categories in AIDSINFOFRND for a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability — South Africa [top]
The 1998 South Africa survey includes separate response categories for "friends" and "relatives." IPUMS-DHS consolidates these two response categories in AIDSINFOFRND for a more comprehensive response category.
