Description

HCMPUBFPC (V762AC) indicates whether the woman reported a public family planning clinic or association as a source for male condoms.

Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, such as HCMPUBFPC, while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

IPUMS-DHS users should be careful to distinguish this variable from HCMPRIVFPC (private family planning clinic or association).

Comparability

Along with universe differences, HCMPUBFPC (V762AC) has some variation in question wording that broadly applies to the "source for male condom" series. For discussion of question wording in this variable series, see the comparability section of HCMDK.

The responses in HCMPUBFPC are organized under the "public sector" header in the survey. Most commonly, this response category is worded as "family planning clinic." However, some countries diverge from this standard convention, and, in some cases, multiple categories were consolidated in HCMPUBFPC to form a single, more comprehensive response. Countries of particular interest are noted below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

HCMPUBFPC (V762AC) first appears in phase IV of the Standard DHS questionnaire. It is removed in phase VI of the standard DHS questionnaire and replaced with "Country-specific other public sector."

Samples from Phase III are also included in this variable. For discussion of differences between phases in this variable series, see the Comparability - Standard DHS tab of HCMDK.

Comparability — Zimbabwe [top]

In the 1994 and 1999 Zimbabwe surveys, there are separate categories for ZNFPC [Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council] clinic, ZNFPC mobile clinic, ZNFPC community-based distributor (CBD). Because HCMPUBFPC focuses on all public family planning clinics and associations, these responses are consolidated in this variable to create a more comprehensive response category. For researchers interested in preserving these country-specific categories:

  • ZNFPC clinic is listed as HCMZW8 in IPUMS-DHS
  • ZNFPC mobile clinic is listed as HCMZW14 in IPUMS-DHS
  • ZNFPC CBD is listed as HCMZW2 in IPUMS-DHS

Additionally, in the 2005, 2010, and 2015 Zimbabwe surveys, there are separate categories for ZNFPC clinic and ZNFPC CBD. These response categories are also consolidated in HCMPUBFPC, as well as preserved in HCMZW8 and HCMZW2, respectively.
