Description
HCMGH7 indicates whether the woman reported a private drug store as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Ghana.
Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
HCMGH7 is combined with HCMGH1 (private pharmacy) and HCMGH6 (private chemist) in HCMPRIVDRUG (all private, formal drug sources) for the 1998 Ghana sample.
IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMGH7 are encouraged to review HCMPRIVDRUG for a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability
HCMGH7 has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.
Though HCMGH7 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMPRIVDRUG, a variable that encompasses all private, formal drug sources as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMGH7 or the Comparability tab of HCMPRIVDRUG for more information on the specific categories combined for Ghana 1998.
