Codes and Frequencies
Description
For women who have been told by a doctor that she has high blood pressure or hypertension, BPHERBS indicates whether she is currently taking traditional medicine or herbs to lower her blood pressure.
Comparability
Along with universe differences, BPHERBS varies across samples in the allowed response categories, sometimes including "not applicable" as well as "yes" and "no." To maximize comparability, IPUMS-DHS uses a common first digit of "1" for both non-affirmative ("no" and "not applicable") responses, and distinguishes between "no" and "not applicable" in the second digit of the harmonized codes.
Comparability - Standard DHS
BPHERBS is not included in any phase of the standard DHS questionnaire.
