Comparability — Index

South Africa |
Comparability
There are significant differences in question wording for some samples that may limit the comparability of DVHANY (D119Y). While most samples ask if the respondent has "ever" sought help from anyone to stop such abuse, some samples ask if the respondent has sought help from anyone to stop such abuse within the past year.
Only those countries with comparability issues for this variable are discussed below.
Comparability - Standard DHS
DVHANY (D119Y) is not included in any phase of the standard DHS questionnaire, it is included in Phase VI forward of the standard domestic violence module.
Comparability — Egypt [top]
The Egypt 2005 sample asks whether the respondent has sought help from anyone to stop such abuse within the past year.
Comparability — Jordan [top]
The 2007 Jordan questionnaire asks, "At any time during the last 12 months when your (last) husband did something to physically hurt you, did you try to get help to prevent or stop him from hurting you?" [emphasis added].
Comparability — South Africa [top]
The 1998 South Africa survey asks, "Have you ever tried to get help from services of any kind because of beatings of other bad treatment?"
