Description
For young children with a fever or cough in the past 2 weeks, FEVTRPRIVHL (H32T) indicates, in response to an open-ended question, whether the child received treatment from a traditional healer or practitioner for this illness.
Some samples in the "FEVTR" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, such as FEVTRPRIVHL, while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
A few samples ask separately about treatment given for fever and treatment given for cough. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in composite coding. A first digit of 1 indicates the child received treatment from a given source, and the second digit indicates the child's illness. A code of "11" indicates the child received treatment for a fever; a code of "12" indicates the child received treatment for a cough; a code of "13" indicates the child received treatment for a fever or a cough; a code of "14" indicates the child received treatment for both a fever and a cough; a code of "15" indicates the child received treatment for a cough and convulsions; a code of "16" indicates the child received treatment for convulsions; and a code of "17" indicates the child received treatment for a fever or rapid/difficult breathing. Universe differences for FEVTRPRIVHL (H32T) are largely based on what illness(es) the child had. Most commonly, this question is asked about children who had either a fever or a cough in the past 2 weeks. Responses for FEVTRPRIVHL vary slightly across samples. Most commonly, this response category is organized under the "Other Source" header and is worded as "traditional healer" or "traditional practitioner." However, some countries diverge from this standard convention, and, in some cases, multiple categories were consolidated to form a single, more comprehensive response. Countries of particular interest are noted below.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question on where treatment was sought for the child's fever or cough is first included in Phase II. In Phase III, the standard wording of this question changes to ask only about treatment of a cough. In Phase IV forward, this question changes back to ask about treatment of the child's fever or cough. FEVTRPRIVHL (H32T) is included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phases II, III, IV, and V. Although FEVTRPRIVHL is removed from the standard DHS recode manual in Phase VI, the response is still included in many Phase VI samples.
