Description
For young children with a fever or cough in the past 2 weeks, FEVTRPUBHC (H32B) indicates, in response to an open-ended question, whether the child received treatment at a public health center for this illness.
Some samples in the "FEVTR" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, such as FEVTRPUBHC, while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
For example, a given sample might include multiple categories for different types of public health centers that could be combined to create a more comprehensive response category. See Comparability for more information on the specific categories combined in this variable.
A few samples ask separately about treatment given for fever and treatment given for cough. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in composite coding. A first digit of 1 indicates the child received treatment from a given source, and the second digit indicates the child's illness. A code of "11" indicates the child received treatment for a fever; a code of "12" indicates the child received treatment for a cough; a code of "13" indicates the child received treatment for a fever or a cough; a code of "14" indicates the child received treatment for both a fever and a cough; a code of "15" indicates the child received treatment for a cough and convulsions; a code of "16" indicates the child received treatment for convulsions; and a code of "17" indicates the child received treatment for a fever or rapid/difficult breathing. Comparability
Universe differences for FEVTRPUBHC (H32B) are largely based on what illness(es) the child had. Most commonly, this question is asked about children who had either a fever or a cough in the past 2 weeks. In addition, FEVTRPUBHC varies slightly in the wording of response. Most commonly, this response category is organized under the "Public Sector" header and is worded as "government health center." Some countries diverge from this standard convention, and, in some cases, multiple categories were consolidated to form a single, more comprehensive response. Countries of particular interest are noted below.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question on where treatment was sought for the child's fever or cough is first included in Phase II. In Phase III, the standard wording of this question changes to ask only about treatment of a cough. In Phases IV and V, this question asks about treatment of the child's fever or cough. FEVTRPUBHC (H32B) is included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phases II, III, IV, and V. Although this response category is removed from the standard DHS recode manual for Phase VI, this response is still included in many Phase VI surveys.
