Description
HCMBJ1 indicates whether the woman reported a public fieldworker as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Benin.
Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
HCMBJ1 is combined with HCMBJ2 (public health worker) and HCMBJ3 (public community health worker) in HCMPUBFW (all public fieldworkers) for the 2011 Benin sample.
Additionally, HCMBJ1 is combined with HCMBJ2 in HCMPUBFW for the 2006 Benin sample.
IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMBJ1 are encouraged to review HCMPUBFW for a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability
HCMBJ1 has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.
Though HCMBJ1 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMPUBFW, a variable that encompasses all public fieldworkers as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMBJ1 or the Comparability tab of HCMPUBFW for more information on the specific categories combined for Benin 2006 and 2011.
