Description
HCMCG3 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, the female respondent reported a traditional healer/therapist as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Republic of the Congo - Brazzaville.
Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
HCMCG3 (traditional healer/therapist) is combined with HCMCG4 (Other traditional therapeutic sources) in HCMPRIVHL (all traditional healers and herbalists) for the 2005 Republic of the Congo - Brazzaville sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMCG3 are encouraged to review HCMPRIVHL for a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability
HCMCG3 has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phase III forward.
Although HCMCG3 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMPRIVHL, a variable that encompasses all traditional healers and herbalists as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMCG3 or the Comparability tab of HCMPRIVHL for more information on the specific categories combined for Republic of the Congo - Brazzaville 2005.
