Description
HCMCM3 indicates whether the woman reported a "shop" as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Cameroon.
Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
HCMCM3 is combined with HCMCM4 (kiosk) in HCMSHOP (all shops/retailers) for the Cameroon samples. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMCM3 are encouraged to review HCMSHOP for a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability
In addition to universe differences, responses in HCMCM3 vary slightly in wording. Some samples word this response as "shop/market," while others list it as "shop."
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.
Though HCMCM3 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMSHOP, a variable that encompasses all shops/retailers as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMCM3 or the Comparability tab of HCMSHOP for more information on the specific categories combined for Cameroon 1998, 2004, and 2011.
