Description
HCMET5 indicates whether the woman reported a "voluntary community health worker (VCHW)" as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Ethiopia.
Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
HCMET5 is combined with HCMET4 (NGO health facility) and HCMET9 (other NGO) in HCMNGO (all NGOs) for the 2011 Ethiopia sample.
IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMET5 are encouraged to review HCMNGO for a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability
Apart from universe differences, HCMET5 has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.
Though HCMET5 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMNGO, a variable that encompasses all non-governmental organizations (NGOs) as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMET5 or the Comparability tab of HCMNGO for more information on the specific categories combined for Ethiopia 2000, 2005, and 2011.
