HCMET9 indicates whether the woman reported some "other NGO" as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Ethiopia.

Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

HCMET9 is combined with HCMET4 (NGO health facility), HCMET6 (NGO community-based outlet), and HCMET8 (NGO family guidance) in HCMNGO (all NGOs) for the 2000 Ethiopia sample.

Additionally, HCMET9 is combined with HCMET4 (NGO health facility) and HCMET7 (NGO CBD/CBRHA) in HCMNGO for the 2005 Ethiopia sample.

HCMET9 is also combined with HCMET4 (NGO health facility) and HCMET5 (VCHW) in HCMNGO for the 2011 Ethiopia sample.

Comparability

Apart from universe differences, HCMET9 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.

Though HCMET9 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMNGO, a variable that encompasses all non-governmental organizations (NGOs) as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMET9 or the Comparability tab of HCMNGO for more information on the specific categories combined for Ethiopia 2000, 2005, and 2011.
