Description
HCMGH1 indicates whether the woman reported a private pharmacy as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Ghana.
Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
HCMGH1 is combined with HCMGH3 (private chemical/drug store) in HCMPRIVDRUG (all private, formal drug sources) for the 2008 and 2014 Ghana samples.
In the 1998 Ghana sample, "chemist" and "drug store" are separated and are preserved in the country-specific variables HCMGH6 and HCMGH7, respectively. HCMGH1 is combined with HCMGH6 and HCMGH7 in HCMPRIVDRUG.
IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMGH1 are encouraged to review HCMPRIVDRUG for a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability
HCMGH1 has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.
Though HCMGH1 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMPRIVDRUG, a variable that encompasses all private, formal drug sources as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMGH1 or the Comparability tab of HCMPRIVDRUG for more information on the specific categories combined for Ghana 1998, 2008, and 2014.
