Description
HCMKE2 indicates whether the woman reported "community-based distributor" as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Kenya.
Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
HCMKE2 is combined with HCMKE1 (community health worker) in HCMPRIVFW (all private fieldworkers) for the 2014 Kenya sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMKE2 are encouraged to review HCMPRIVFW for a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability
HCMKE2 has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.
Though HCMKE2 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMPRIVFW, a variable that encompasses all private fieldworkers as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMKE2 or the Comparability tab of HCMPRIVFW for more information on the specific categories combined for Kenya 2014.
