Description
HCMLS1 indicates whether the woman reported a CHAL [Christian Health Association of Lesotho] hospital as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Lesotho.
Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
HCMLS1 is combined with HCMLS2 (CHAL health center) and HCMLS3 (CHAL health post) in HCMPRIVMIS (all faith-based health facilities) for the 2014 Lesotho sample. Additionally, HCMLS1 is combined with HCMLS2 in HCMPRIVMIS for the 2004 and 2009 Lesotho samples. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMLS1 are encouraged to review HCMPRIVMIS for a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability
HCMLS1 has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.
Although HCMLS1 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMPRIVMIS, a variable that encompasses all faith-based health facilities as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMLS1 or the Comparability tab of HCMPRIVMIS for more information on the specific categories combined for the Lesotho samples.
