Description
HCMMG1 indicates whether the woman reported a "level I government hospital" as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Madagascar.
Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
HCMMG1 is combined with HCMMG2 (level II government hospital) in HCMPUBHOS (all public hospitals) for the 2008 Madagascar sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMMG1 are encouraged to review HCMPUBHOS for a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability
HCMMG1 has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.
Though HCMMG1 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMPUBHOS, a variable that encompasses all public hospitals as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMMG1 or the Comparability tab of HCMPUBHOS for more information on the specific categories combined for Madagascar 2008.
