HCMML13 indicates whether the female respondent reported a private health clinic as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Mali.

Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

HCMML13 is combined with HCMML12 (private hospital/clinic) in HCMPRIVHOS (all private hospitals/clinics) for the Mali 2018 sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMML13 are encouraged to review HCMPRIVHOS for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

HCMML13 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.

Although HCMML13 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMPRIVHOS, a variable that encompasses all private hospitals/clinics as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMML13 or the Comparability tab of HCMPRIVHOS for more information on the specific categories combined for the Mali 2018 sample.
