Description
HCMMM5 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, the woman reported the Myanmar Red Cross as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Myanmar.
Some samples in the "HCM" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
HCMMM5 is combined with HCMMM4 (Marie Stopes International), HCMMM6 (Population Services International/Myanmar [PSI/M]), HCMMM7 (Myanmar Medical Association), and HCMMM8 (other NGO) in HCMNGO (all NGOs) for the 2015 Myanmar sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMMM5 are encouraged to review HCMNGO for a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability
HCMMM5 has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.
Although HCMMM5 is a country-specific response not included in the standard DHS modules, it is combined with other responses in HCMNGO, a standard variable that encompasses all NGOs as potential sources for male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMMM5 or the Comparability tab of HCMNGO for more information on the specific categories combined for the 2015 Myanmar sample.
