HCMMW1 indicates whether the woman reported a "mission hospital" as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Malawi.

Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

HCMMW1 is combined with HCMMW2 (mission health center), HCMMW3 (mission mobile clinic), and HCMMW9 (mission door-to-door) in HCMPRIVMIS (all faith-based health facilities) for the 2010 Malawi sample.

Additionally, HCMMW1 is combined with HCMMW2 and HCMMW3 in HCMPRIVMIS for the 2000 and 2004 Malawi samples.

Comparability

HCMMW1 has slight differences in response wording. For Malawi 2000 and 2004, the header is labeled "mission" with "hospital" as a response. For Malawi 2010, the header combines "mission" and "Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM)," with "hospital" as a response.

An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.

Though HCMMW1 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMPRIVMIS, a variable that encompasses all faith-based facilities as sources of male condoms.
