Description
HCMMW6 indicates whether the woman reported a "health surveillance assistant (HSA)" as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Malawi.
Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
HCMMW6 is combined with HCMMW8 (CBDA/door-to-door) in HCMPUBFW (all public fieldworkers) for the 2010 Malawi sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMMW6 are encouraged to review HCMPUBFW for a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability
HCMMW6 has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.
Though HCMMW6 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMPUBFW, a variable that encompasses all public fieldworkers as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMMW6 or the Comparability tab of HCMPUBFW for more information on the specific categories combined for Malawi 2010.
