Description
HCMNM1 indicates whether the woman reported a "private hospital" as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Namibia.
Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
HCMNM1 is combined with HCMNM2 (private clinic) in HCMPRIVHOS (all private hospitals and clinics) for the 2013 Namibia sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMNM1 are encouraged to review HCMPRIVHOS for a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability
HCMNM1 has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.
Although HCMNM1 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMPRIVHOS, a variable that encompasses all private hospitals and clinics as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMNM1 or the Comparability tab of HCMPRIVHOS for more information on the specific categories combined for Namibia 2013.
