Description

HCMNP1 indicates whether the woman reported a public PHC (primary health care) center as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Nepal.

Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

HCMNP1 is combined with HCMNP2 (public health post) and HCMNP3 (public sub-health post) in HCMPUBHC (all public health centers and health posts) for the 2001, 2006, and 2011 Nepal samples. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMNP1 are encouraged to review HCMPUBHC for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

Apart from universe differences, HCMNP1 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phase III forward.

Although HCMNP1 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMPUBHC, a variable that encompasses all public health centers and health posts as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMNP1 or the Comparability tab of HCMPUBHC for more information on the specific categories combined for Nepal 2001, 2006, and 2011.
