Description
HCMNP11 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, the woman reported some other non-governmental organization (NGO) as a source for male condoms. The meaning of "other" must be interpreted relative to the specific response categories included in a particular sample. This response category is country-specific to Nepal.
Some samples in the "HCM" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
HCMNP11 is combined with other NGOs in the 2001, 2006, and 2011 Nepal surveys:
- In the 2001 Nepal survey, HCMNP11 is combined with HCMNP6 (FPAN), HCMNP7 (Marie Stopes), HCMNP8 (ADRA), and HCMNP9 (Nepal Red Cross) in HCMNGO (all NGOs).
- In the 2006 and 2011 Nepal surveys, HCMNP11 is combined with HCMNP6 (FPAN), HCMNP7 (Marie Stopes), HCMNP8 (ADRA), HCMNP9 (Nepal Red Cross), and HCMNP10 (UMN) in HCMNGO (all NGOs).
IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMNP11 are encouraged to review HCMNGO for a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability
Apart from universe differences and slight differences in question wording, HCMNP11 has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.
Although HCMNP11 is a country-specific response not included in the standard DHS modules, it is combined with other responses in HCMNGO, a standard variable that encompasses all NGOs as potential sources for male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMNP11 or the Comparability tab of HCMNGO for more information on the specific categories combined for the 2001, 2006, and 2011 Nepal samples.
Universe
- Nepal 2001: Ever-married women age 15-49.
- Nepal 2006: All women age 15-49.
- Nepal 2011: All women age 15-49.
