Description

HCMNP6 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, the woman reported the Family Planning Association of Nepal (FPAN), a non-governmental organization, as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Nepal.

Some samples in the "HCM" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

HCMNP6 is combined with other NGOs in the 2001, 2006, and 2011 Nepal surveys:

• In the 2001 Nepal survey, HCMNP6 is combined with HCMNP7 (Marie Stopes), HCMNP8 (ADRA), HCMNP9 (Nepal Red Cross), and HCMNP11 (other NGOs) in HCMNGO (all NGOs).
• In the 2006 and 2011 Nepal surveys, HCMNP6 is combined with HCMNP7 (Marie Stopes), HCMNP8 (ADRA), HCMNP9 (Nepal Red Cross), HCMNP10 (UMN), and HCMNP11 (other NGOs) in HCMNGO (all NGOs).

IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMNP6 are encouraged to review HCMNGO for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

Apart from universe differences, HCMNP6 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phase III forward.

Although HCMNP6 is a country-specific response not included in the standard DHS modules, it is combined with other responses in HCMNGO, a standard variable that encompasses all NGOs as potential sources for male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMNP6 or the Comparability tab of HCMNGO for more information on the specific categories combined for the 2001, 2006, and 2011 Nepal samples.
