Description

HCMNP8 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, the woman reported ADRA (Adventist Development and Relief Agency), a non-governmental organization (NGO), as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Nepal.

Some samples in the "HCM" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

HCMNP8 is combined with other NGOs in the 2001, 2006, and 2011 Nepal surveys:

• In the 2001 Nepal survey, HCMNP8 is combined with HCMNP6 (FPAN), HCMNP7 (Marie Stopes), HCMNP9 (Nepal Red Cross), and HCMNP11 (other NGOs) in HCMNGO (all NGOs).
• In the 2006 and 2011 Nepal surveys, HCMNP8 is combined with HCMNP6 (FPAN), HCMNP7 (Marie Stopes), HCMNP9 (Nepal Red Cross), HCMNP10 (UMN), and HCMNP11 (other NGOs) in HCMNGO (all NGOs).

Comparability

Apart from universe differences, HCMNP8 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phase III forward.

Although HCMNP8 is a country-specific response not included in the standard DHS modules, it is combined with other responses in HCMNGO, a standard variable that encompasses all NGOs as potential sources for male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMNP8 or the Comparability tab of HCMNGO for more information on the specific categories combined for the 2001, 2006, and 2011 Nepal samples.
