Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

HCMTG4 (state pharmacy) is combined with HCMTG5 (dispensary/infirmary) in HCMPUBDRUG (all public pharmacies and dispensaries) for the 1998 Togo sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMTG4 are encouraged to review HCMPUBDRUG for a more comprehensive response category.

An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.

Although HCMTG4 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMPUBDRUG, a variable that encompasses all public pharmacies and dispensaries as sources of male condoms.
