HCMTG8 indicates whether the female respondent reported street commerce as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Togo.

Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

HCMTG8 (street commerce) is combined with HCMTG6 (shop/market) and HCMTG7 (gas station) in HCMSHOP (all shops/retailers) for the 1998 Togo sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMTG8 are encouraged to review HCMSHOP for a more comprehensive response category.

HCMTG8 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.

Although HCMTG8 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMSHOP, a variable that encompasses all shops/retailers as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMTG8 or the Comparability tab of HCMSHOP for more information on the specific categories combined for the 1998 Togo sample.
