HCMTZ6 indicates whether the woman reported a public regional hospital as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Tanzania.

Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

HCMTZ6 is combined with HCMTZ5 (public referral hospital) and HCMTZ7 (public district hospital) in HCMPUBHOS (all public hospitals) for the 2004 and 2010 Tanzania samples.

Additionally, HCMTZ6 is combined with HCMTZ7 in HCMPUBHOS for the 1996 and 1999 Tanzania samples.

Comparability

Apart from slight universe differences, HCMTZ6 is largely comparable across samples. For most Tanzania samples, the variable was a part of a question that asked the respondent to list all known sources for male condoms. However, in the 1999 Tanzania sample, only the first response was recorded. Although the respondent may have known of some other place as a source for male condoms, only her first response was documented.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.

Though HCMTZ6 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMPUBHOS, a variable that encompasses all public hospitals as sources of male condoms.
