Description
HCMZW11 indicates whether the woman reported a "general dealer" as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Zimbabwe.
Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
HCMZW11 is combined with HCMZW12 (supermarket), HCMZW13 (tuck shop), HCMZW5 (service station), and HCMZW6 (other retailer) in HCMSHOP (all shops/retailers) for the 2010 Zimbabwe sample.
Additionally, HCMZW11 is combined with HCMZW9 (supermarket/tuck shop) and HCMZW10 (bottle store/bar) in HCMSHOP. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMZW11 are encouraged to review HCMSHOP for a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability
HCMZW11 has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.
Though HCMZW11 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMSHOP, a variable that encompasses all shops/retailers as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMZW11 or the Comparability tab of HCMSHOP for more information on the specific categories combined for Zimbabwe 2010 and 2015.
